Update 2.0: I get a balls load of hits to this page from various dude why is my iPhone camera roll black? search queries. Apparently I’m an SEO master. I’m @kevinebaugh on Twitter, and you should follow me.

Update: I went to the Apple Store and painlessly replaced my phone (due to the yellow bar issue). I explained this black screen issue as well, and they said it was an OS problem and that a clean restore would fix the problem.

The Camera Roll app on my iPhone 4 has been acting fucky. This is how it currently looks:

When I click in the black abyss, I get to the picture whose thumbnail should be there. What’s also weird, is here is the view from the top level ‘Albums’:

The black space even appears in that thumbnail preview of the camera roll. What the heck? I’ve restored my iPhone, force quit the Photos app, and re-synced my photos. Nothing has helped. I’ve seen similar issues some old like here and here, but other recent ones like here.

I’m going to head to the Apple store anyway to have them deal with the yellow band at the bottom of my screen, so I might as well bring this up too. Has anyone figured out how to fix this?

I posted a solution on my blog “http://tehloft.com/2010/08/16/iphone-camera-roll-shows-blanks-after-iphoto-import/”. Perhaps this might help you out.
